Poveglia Island [Nov. 28th, 2006|10:34 am]

The RPG "Poveglia Academy" is set on the actual island of Poveglia, Venice.

Information about the island itself can be found here, including pictures and history. Any information found about the island that is NOT currently posted would be highly appreciated. Just put it in a reply to this post. Thanks!

The island of Poveglia, in the Venetian Lagoon, is considered one of the most haunted places on earth. A bit of searching on the internet turns up scraps of information about it. It was featured on the show "Scariest Places on Earth," and most reviews rate the Poveglia episode as the best and scariest of the show. Anyone who can get a copy of this show for us wins major kudos and insane amounts of gratitude.

Poveglia was settled almost a thousand years ago. It has existed in many forms, as a monastery, an independent colony, a dumping-ground for plague victims, a powder-magazine for Napoleon, and a mental hospital for a sadistic doctor. The reports of haunting on the island started after the plague, when hundreds of people were taken to the island and abandoned to die. Napoleon cared little for ghosts in his time there, but when a mental hospital was built on the site in the 1930s, the cruel doctor tortured his patients, and laughed at their stories of ghosts--until he went mad himself, and threw himself from the bell tower on the island.

The bell tower, along with most of the buildings on the island, still stands. It rings quite frequently. The bell was removed in 1913. Access to the island is extremely difficult. Plans to build various student centers and recreation facilities continue to fall through. For those who are interested, the plans for the student center are still online and there is some great information and pictures, at www.poveglia.it
Fantastic pictures of the creepy can also be found here: http://www.metroradio.co.uk/PhotoWall.asp?PT=The+Robson+Files&id=20096

This site is not meant to be an historical reference when researching Poveglia, I think it's kind of like a Dungeons and Dragons sort of scenario or virtual LARPing. Looks kind of cool.

The island is off limits to anyone other then Governmental persons, or Winearies. You will not be able to " Go " to the island itself. And the good doctor went insane. You need to do your research before you begin to say anything about the history on the island, or what happened with the hospital.

The date now is 8-20-2008.. The Poveglia episode you are referring to is on the Sci-Fi channel tonight at 12 oclock midnight and is on once every 2 or 3 months as a re-run.. if you havent seen it, look into it.. Definitely beats any other "haunted places", tv shows.. etc....

The facts are fine. The mental hospital wasnt built until the 1930's, but the bell tower from which the bell was removed in 1930 was standing long before that. PS... This episode is on the Sci-fi channel right now for anybody who is interested in seeing it.

The Angel in the "graveyard"

(Link)

Hey Everyone

- Me And some of my friends has been on the island, few years ago,
and read here that some of you saw the place on tv?
Well if you saw the little angel statue, that is at the"graveyard",
and if you're planning to go there, be careful.
Some of my friends did'nt know that it was there, he later asked me if i also saw the angel and the women statue, behind the angel???? WTF.....
It makes no sense, becouse when i saw it, it was only the angel that was there.....
Could anyone refresh my memory and tell me, if there realy was a woman, behind the little angel statue. Please write..

Why would anyone visit that place at night? I would totally do it during the day to look at all the creepy stuff.. but at night? I'd kill myself.. that place is terribly scary!

Re: Whyyy :(

It is also dangerous. One of the film crew fell into a 17 foot hole, broke four ribs and punctured a lung. He spent one month in a Venice hospital. One of the upstairs rooms of the building had a collapsed floor that one could easily have fallen through. It is also infested with scorpions. One chair had more than 50 in it! Can you imaginine siting down on that at night (or any other time)?

Poveglia's history

(Link)

I've seen the "Scariest Places...." episode several times about the California family who visits Poveglia. At night, no less. I thought, omg, why would ANYONE go there at night? To the person who visited during the day and didn't think it was all that scary, revisit at night -if you dare. There's a reason they call the wee hours between 2 and 3am "dead time".

What a horrible history. The contemporary 20th century history is bad enough, but think back, back, back to the days of the Black Plague, which was around 1358 in Europe. It absolutely devastated Europe, killed millions. And to think they just dumped people off on Poveglia -dead or alive. It was their final stop.

Alan Robson's sidebars are the scariest of any I've seen or heard. From a paranormal investigative perspective, it was foolish to drop an unsuspecting family of five on that island. At night. Holy crap. But that's what's awesome about the series, too bad it's no longer in production. I agree it would be more interesting to watch it from say, the perspective of seasoned investigators like GHI.

Re: Poveglia's history

(Link)

For some reason, I find Poveglia incredibly intriguing. But you are right, it was very foolish to drop a family of five onto that island.
The people working the vinyards on the island wear masks to avoid the ash that still coats many surfaces on the island, and Venetians refuse to drink any wine produced from grapes that grow there.
Also, fishermen still routinely find body parts in with their catches.
I read a while back on the web that the government was planning to convert the Island into a university and a large tourist area with shopping and museums. However, it appears that the project has been abandoned. Gee...I wonder why!
The ghosts of Poveglia are active, and that's not going to change, regardless of what people do to try to get rid of them. While I would not mind visiting myself, I don't believe that I would be inclined to stay past sundown.

I agree

(Link)

I defenitly agree with a previous comment made. How could the bell have been removed from the building in 1913, if the building hadn't in fact even been built yet. This leaves me skeptical that anyone really knows what goes on in places like Poveglia, because everyone's facts are different. It is extremely confusing trying to figure out what to believe...

Scariest Places on Earth--Poveglia, etc.

(Link)

While Scariest Places on Earth was indeed a great show, it was also a well-known scam.
All the locations that Families were sent to were rigged. Sounds, doors opening and closing, items falling or moving, were all rigged ahead of time and also during the taping of the show. That is not to say that the locations were not actually haunted--paranormal activity doesn't happen on cue, so they had to rig it to make sure that they got a good show. I think the Poveglia Island episode came as a surprise to the creators though, because the family seemed to pick up some genuine activity, which they didn't really expect. Nevertheless, the show is still worth watching, you just have to take the Episodes with the Families with a grain of salt.
Also, Poveglia Islands buildings were built over many, many years. The church was there long before the hospital--at the time the monastery was there. Other buildings were built much later. The bell was removed in 1913, but later when the hospital was there, the residents would regularly report hearing it ring. It apparently is still heard ringing.

In case anyone was interested, the show Ghost Adventures did an investigation of Povelgia. I can't say they're the best group of investigators but the show was interesting to watch anyway. They catch some interesting stuff, including the black mist. The episode is currently of youtube, just search "Ghost Adventures Poveglia". Hope that's helpful. :)

Ghost Adventures

(Link)

Ghost Adventures is a show on Travel Channel that has three guys, Zak, Nick, and Aaron doing all of the camera work and the investigating work. I'm new to the show, but I like it so far, since they do seem to find some truly spooky events.
Anyway, I just saw the episode on Poveglia yesterday, after their afternoon marathon for New Years. Zak, the lead investigator is no actor, truly...just watch him try. But yet he seems to genuinely get possessed while in one of the "bad rooms" in the hospital, threatening and yelling at Aaron to get out of the room (insert numerous expletives here).
Also, when they head out to the area where the bodies were burned and buried during the plague, Zak and Nick are standing in the field calling out, while Aaron is standing next to/behind the static night vision camera on the bridge, looking out over the fields. You can see that there is no breeze blowing the tall grass in the field, and yet you hear the sounds of someone running through the grass and then see the grasses right in front of the bridge violently sway as though run through. Right after that are footsteps on the bridge and the static camera is knocked sideways. Creepy!
So, Ghost Adventures was a pretty good show on the nighttime goings on of the island, for anyone interested.
